Here are the latest branch updates:

  • Christmas Raffle – there’s still time for you to donate to our Christmas raffle this year.
    • The last date for donations is Tuesday 7 December. To donate, please bring along your food and sundry items to the UNISON Branch Office (7.50 EC Stoner) or you can donate at the Ziff Café and leave your name at the counter to ensure we can email you a ticket number.
    • We’ll also be holding donation events at Ziff Café on Tuesday, 23 November and Tuesday, 30 November from 11.30-1pm if you’d like to come along. We’ll also have details shortly of a donation event at Leeds Trinity University in early December.
    • We’ll be sending our donations to Trussell Trust Leeds South & East and Richmond Hill Elderly Action
    • Your donation guarantees you one entry into our prize draw. You can find further details of our prize list and ideas for donation items in the Raffle launch article on our Branch Website.
  • Orgreave: demand an independent public inquiry – on 18 June, 1984, striking miners at Orgreave were surrounded by police horses and dogs and savagely attacked.  It’s been called “the worst example of a mass frame-up in this country this century”. But in the weeks following, it was miners who faced charges:
    • 95 picketers were charged with riot and violent disorder, charges that carried a life sentence.  While the trial fell apart, the wounds from Orgreave have never healed.
    • Despite public calls at the time for an investigation, no inquiry has ever taken place.
    • And in 2016, the then Home Secretary Amber Rudd announced there would be no Orgreave inquiry of any kind. The government must establish a public and independent inquiry into what happened at Orgreave.
    • Can you add your name and help us build pressure on Home Secretary Priti Patel to act?
    • No lies, no cover ups, we demand truth and justice: Sign the petition
  • Strike Ballot – the postal strike ballot for the 1.5% pay offer at the University of Leeds opens on Monday 6 December – if you need to check your personal details are up-to-date, you can log in or register with My UNISON or email us at unison@leeds.ac.uk.
    • UCU at Leeds has got a mandate for strike action, part of which is around the 1.5% pay offer for this year, so if we can get a mandate and need to take strike action, we would look to work in tandem with UCU to have the biggest effect we can.
    • You may have seen a tweet from UCU about a UUK/UCEA event, where some VCs commented the following: “In a @UniversitiesUK & @UCEA1 press conference, vice chancellors compared staff working from home during the pandemic with taking strike action ‘We have been able to cope with 0% of staff coming onto campus [during covid], so I am sure we can cope with this’ “
    • This shows the utter contempt that some VCs have for their staff: how can any of them suggest that having staff working harder than ever at home is the same as staff taking strike action?
    • Only by showing them the effect of what all of us not working will be will make them re-think their attitude and also re-think the paltry below-inflation pay offers they are giving us year on year. None of us can afford this any longer, now is the time to have your voice heard in this ballot.
    • The Branch also submitted an FOI request regarding senior staff bonuses since March 2020: 193 staff at the University are paid above £100,000 and 11 of those received a Reward & Recognition payment. They won’t share the amounts with us at present, but this is a kick in the teeth for the rest of us who received an Amazon voucher or nothing at all for the extra work we’ve put in to keep the University going.
  • UNISON Diaries 2022 – UNISON’s 2022 diaries have arrived in Branch. If you would like to come and collect one or have one posted to you, please get in touch at d.amesbury@leeds.ac.uk
  • UoL Xmas Closure & Pay Date – a reminder that the University of Leeds closes for the Christmas break on Friday 17 December and we are due back to work on Tuesday 4 January 2022. Also, everyone’s pay date will be Friday 17 December and we won’t be paid again until Monday 31 January 2022 so do be mindful of the length of time between pay dates and plan finances accordingly

As always, if you would like advice and support about a workplace issue, please contact us at unison@leeds.ac.uk or contact your local rep or Branch Officer and you can find up-to-date information here on our branch website and on our social media channels, details of which can be found below.
