Dear UoL member,

As you will be aware, UNISON will be taking further strike action from Monday 20 – Friday 24 June:  a full 5 days. UCU will not be out on strike that week, but we will be taking action in a week where exam and classification boards and an Open Day (24 June) will be taking place.

At the end of this paragraph is a link to our updated Strike FAQs – nothing much has changed in terms of how the strike will operate, but we have a large number of new members for who this may be their first time striking. If you know any new members and you have taken strike action previously, please do talk to each other about your experience and encourage all members to take action for w/c 20 June. The updated Strike FAQs can be found on our website: Strike FAQs for 20.6.22 to 24.6.22 | UNISON University of Leeds (leedsuni-unison.org.uk)

This will be our last round of action under our current mandate, so we want to make a big impact and show the University that we will no longer accept low, below-inflation pay rises. We are increasingly hearing of members who have started using food banks for the first time or are having to take second jobs even though they are on what has always been considered a “comfortable”  grade. This is not good enough at an institution that brand itself as “world-class”. You and your colleagues deserve more.

We will have National colleagues coming to the pickets and a wide range of speakers at the rallies at 11:30am each day on Parkinson steps.

Strike pay of up to £50 per day and the Branch Hardship Fund will also be available after the strike. It will be the same way of applying as before and you can find previous documents on our website should you wish to check the process. We will send an updated form and the supporting documents to all members again after the strike action has taken place.

We will send reminders out next week about the strike action.

If you are taking strike action, please can you let us know either by emailing us at unison@leeds.ac.uk with the dates you will be striking or by signing the strike register on the picket lines. We ask to record names of who is taking strike action so we can apply for National Strike Pay for you. Please let us know that you have taken strike action by Friday, 1 July 2022.

***LATEST NEWS ON THE 22/23 PAY CONSULTATION***

Following on from the online pay consultation that was held during May, 55% of you voted and the vast majority voted to REJECT the 3% pay offer. We will now be moving towards a postal ballot for further industrial action. This should start in July 2022, and we will send further information out as soon as we have it. We need to get over 50% of the membership voting in this postal ballot to get a strike mandate, so if you have moved recently or you’d like to check your address details, you can do so by logging into My UNISON or emailing us at unison@leeds.ac.uk.

We hope to see you on the pickets w/c 20 June!

In solidarity,

Branch Committee.
